What is Carbon Inequality?
Carbon inequality: the oversized contribution by wealthy individuals to carbon pollution, overwhelmingly harming the poorest.
The wealthiest 1% of the population emits more carbon pollution than the poorest 5 billion people combined (SEI and Oxfam), which indicates that the climate crisis is a crisis of inequality.

WHAT CAN WE DO ABOUT IT?
Global economic agreements and national policies have incentivized wealth-building and luxury lifestyles that threaten to destabilize the climate on which we all depend. This has lead to carbon inequality. There are many possible solutions to address carbon inequality, including:

-
International agreements to incentivize low-carbon lifestyles or disincentivize high-carbon lifestyles
-
A tax on polluting investments and luxuries like private jets and super-yachts
-
A tax break for those reducing carbon pollution

Many of these solutions will need to be implemented at the national or even regional level. By raising awareness, advocating for policy changes, and engaging with communities, we aim to drive social change for a more equal and sustainable global economy.
